One final detail

Silver jewellery beside a silk scarf and a dark leather bag

Accessories are easy to add and surprisingly easy to overdo. Start with an outfit you already wear, then try one piece at a time. A photograph can help you compare the versions without relying on memory.

Check the scale

A fine chain may disappear against a thick jumper. A cuff may catch on a narrow sleeve. Try the accessory with the actual clothes, then move around. Something that looks good in a box can be awkward once you are wearing it.

If several pieces compete for attention, take one off and compare. You may prefer the busier version. The point of changing one thing at a time is to make that choice easier.

Repeat something small

A dark belt can pick up the colour of your shoes. An earring can echo the rounded handle of a bag. You do not need a matching set; one repeated colour or shape is often enough.

Try gold and silver together before deciding that they clash. Put both beside the neckline you plan to wear. Their size and finish can matter as much as the colour of the metal.

Wear it for an ordinary day

Check whether the bag holds what you carry and whether the scarf stays in place. Jewellery that catches on your knitwear will soon become annoying. Test new clasps and fastenings before taking the piece out.

Store chains separately and keep smooth, clean fabric between items that could scratch each other. Check the maker's care advice before polishing a plated or coated finish.
